It was published in paperback in 1956 by Mentor [The New American Library and contains complete texts of The Republic; Apology; Crito; Phaedo; Ion; Meno and Symposium; all of which come with an introduction by W. H. D. Rouse. About this book: In the golden days of Greek civilisation, 400 years before the birth of Christ, the philosopher Plato wrote the DIALOGUES which, to this day, comprise the most influential body of philosophy of the Western World. Written in the form of debates, the DIALOGUES are filled with philosophy's continual search for truth and the moving drama of intellectual conflict. The Republic is a brilliant discussion of the ideal state and the philosopher-king, the wise and just prototype of a ruler who could cure the world's ills. In the dialogues, Apology, Crito and Phaedo, the imposing figure of Socrates (who incidentally wrote nothing himself), Plato's beloved mentor, emerges as Socrates discusses respect for law and authority, human virtue, and the immortality of the soul. The additional dialogues contain the great philosopher's thinking on subjects of such universal and ageless interest as art, virtue and the nature of love and beauty. After Socrates’ death, Plato set up a school in a place called Academy in 386BC, where he spent time writing down his memories of what Socrates had said and adding his own materials, but grouping all under the name of his beloved teacher. Some of the dialogues as recorded are didactic – that is they recommend or explain something; some are negative in exposing or disproving a mistake and some state or show a difficulty with no solution. The numbers and letters in parentheses at the top of each right-hand page of the translation refer to the pages of the standard Greek text. Includes a Greek Alphabet and Pronouncing Index at the back of the book
