Paperback. Condizione: As New. The American (1997 Everyman Edition) by Henry James ? Crappy Old Books Looking for 19th-century transatlantic awkwardness wrapped in a handsome hardcover? Look no further! The American by Henry James follows Christopher Newman, a rich, self-made American trying to navigate the bewildering maze of European aristocracy?with all the charm of a bull in a Baroque china shop. This 1997 Everyman edition gives you the full James experience: dense sentences, ironic detachment, and a painfully polite culture clash that somehow manages to be both subtle and savage. It?s got romance, scandal, and that trademark Jamesian sense that everyone is being far too polite while quietly judging each other to death. Sure, our copy has probably been sneezed on and used as a coaster (or worse), but that just adds character. The binding might creak like a haunted floorboard and the dust jacket may have seen better decades, but hey? it?s literature . Crappy Old Books: Where every page turn might come with a mysterious stain, but at least the prose is still pristine. Condition as new. Codice articolo 4029

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Condition: (see pic.) The book is unread but there are slight watermarks to the pages. Still a very good, clean and tight copy. Synopsis:A wealthy American man of business descends on Europe in search of a wife to make his fortune complete. In Paris Christopher Newman is introduced to Claire de Cintre, daughter of the ancient House of Bellegarde, and to Valentin, her charming young brother. His bid for Claire's hand receives an icy welcome from the heads of the family, an elder brother and their formidable mother, the old Marquise. Can they stomach his manners for the sake of his dollars? Out of this classic collision between the old world and the new, James weaves a fable of thwarted desire that shifts between comedy, tragedy, romance and melodrama a fable which in the later version printed here takes on some of the subtleties associated with this greatest novels.
