Concerned with the use of gas chromatography to solve biological and biochemical problems. Provides thorough coverage of the methods involved--basic principles and equipment, multidimensional techniques, detectors and derivatization techniques. Several chapters deal specifically with biological applications such as the biological profiling and monitoring of drug therapy, and the detection of urinary acids and steroids, prostaglandins, fatty acids and lipids. Treats drug abuse detection, toxicological problems and the determination of heavy metals in blood plasma. The use of gas chromatography for identifying bacteria in the clinical microbiology laboratory is also discussed.

Dr. Clement received his PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Waterloo.
Gas chromatography is the subtlest?and possibly the most expert?chemical detective in the complex world of materials analysis. When combined with many of the sensitive detectors now available, gas chromatography provides a means of investigating ultra-trace levels of compounds?even in a complex mixture. It is not surprising that gas chromatography is viewed as the ideal technique for investigating the complex chemical systems often encountered in biochemical, biomedical, and clinical studies. This is the first handbook of modern gas chromatography techniques that addresses those essential to the complex separations demanded in biochemical, biomedical, and clinical studies, subjects often overlooked in other textbooks. Essential to the scientist who needs only the representative GC techniques useful in real applications, Gas Chromatography provides the muscular basics of the discipline?without needlessly detailed theory. Its balanced and timely look at both techniques and applications is designed to meet the needs of both novices and experienced users of GC. Inside you?ll find discussion of:
