While research into ADHD has yielded many exciting insights in recent years, the storm of controversy over the etiology, definition, assessment, and treatment of this puzzling disorder continues to rage on. As fascinating as this debate may be, however, what matters most to practitioners attempting to help children and their families cope with ADHD are proven solutions to the problems they confront in their everyday practices. Written by internationally acknowledged leaders in the field, this book provides these solutions. This updated and expanded Second Edition of the critically acclaimed Managing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children presents a tested, multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and treatment of childhood ADHD. The book begins with an exhaustive review of a century?s research into the etiology and development of ADHD. The authors, cited extensively for both academic and clinical excellence, provide an insightful and thought-provoking account of past and current thinking on diagnostic symptoms, comorbidity, developmental course, and etiology of ADHD. Next, Drs. Sam Goldstein and Michael Goldstein develop a rigorous, research-based assessment model. They provide clear, step-by-step guidelines for the evaluation of ADHD?medically, academically, and within the family setting. And, with the help of numerous case studies, they describe techniques for the practical interpretation of data. With the primary therapeutic aim of promoting normal childhood development, the treatment approach outlined in this book combines drug therapy, behavior modification, cognitive-developmental techniques, classroom interventions, and more. Practitioners seeking to relieve symptoms of ADHD while helping parents, teachers, and children create a safe, supportive environment will find the discussion of risk and protective factors invaluable. Managing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children, Second Edition is an important working resource for psychologists, social workers, educators, and physicians who manage one of today?s most prevalent and challenging childhood disorders.
