Sinossi

The professional's source . Handbooks in the Wiley Series in Mechanical Engineering Practice Handbook of Energy Systems Engineering Production and Utilization Edited by Leslie C. Wilbur Here is the essential information needed to select, compare, and evaluate energy components and systems. Handbook of Energy Systems is a rich sourcebook of reference data and formulas, performance criteria, codes and standards, and techniques used in the development and production of energy. It focuses on the major sources of energy technology: coal, hydroelectric and nuclear power, petroleum, gas, and solar energy Each section of the Handbook is a mini-primer furnishing modern methods of energy storage, conservation, and utilization, techniques for analyzing a wide range of components such as heat exchangers, pumps, fans and compressors, principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics, current energy resource data and much more. 1985 (0 471-86633-4) 1,300 pp.

Informazioni sull?autore

About the editor Alexander Blake is Engineer at Large at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he also chairs several design review and policy committees within the Laboratory's Mechanical Engineering Department. After graduation and postgraduate research in mechanical engineering at London University, he held a number of technical and management positions with British and U.S. industries. His U.S. assignments included positions with Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Associated Spring Barnes Group, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, Aerojet General Corporation, and the Boeing Company He holds several patent disclosures and many of his design and research solutions have appeared in national and international publications. He has authored two textbooks, Design of Curved Members for Machines, 2nd Edition (1979) and Practical Stress Analysis in Engineering Design (1982). In 1969 he was awarded the title of Chartered Engineer by the British Council of Engineering Institutions and was made a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1974.

Dalla quarta di copertina

This handy reference guide encompasses all facets of mechanical and structural design, presenting current information on mechanics, materials and structures, including finite-element modeling, developments in fracture control and basic regulatory aspects of pressure vessel design. It gives mechanical engineers, designers, and civil engineers quick access to the basic design rules, significant formulas, and essential materials data for preparing estimates and making on-the-spot decisions. Stressing design fundamentals and application ingenuity, Handbook of Mechanics, Materials, end Structures offers professionals a wide range of techniques and data in a practical, at-hand format Basic theory is explained in simple language and at an algebraic level. The Handbook treats math in an accessible way, employing simple notation, graphical illustrations, ready-to-use formulas and numerical examples. You?ll find coverage of all areas of engineering:

  • A self-contained primer on the concepts of statics and dynamics, covering material on equilibrium, kinematics, frictional effects, principal laws of kinetics and plane motion of rigid bodies.
  • A comprehensive treatment of strength of materials as applied to mechanical and structural design.
  • A brief review of conventional testing of materials including the principles of metals and alloys, creep, fatigue concepts and the applications of fracture mechanics to the characterization of metals.
  • An introduction to experimental stress analysis
  • A wealth of practical design information on straight and curved members and plates.
Because of the unique challenges and responsibilities associated with the design and quality control of pressurized systems, The Handbook of Mechanics, Materials, and Structures offers especially thorough technical background on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The last chapter of the book is devoted to guiding the design engineer through the intricacies of the code and provides an extensive list of key references essential for further study.
