Dr. Rita G. Adiyodi formerly Rhodes Visiting Fellow, Somerville College, Oxford (197678), is Professor of Zoology at Calicut University. She served as President of the Crustacean Reprobiology and Aquaculture Bureau of India and as Vice-President of the Indian Society of Invertebrate Reproduction. Dr. Rita Adiyodi currently represents India on the International Committee of Comparative Endocrinology. Both editors have been working extensively on reproduction and growth biology of arthropods for the last twenty-five years. They have written and edited several books and published about one hundred and seventy research papers and advanced reviews.
Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume IV: Fertilization, Development, and Parental Care Edited by K.G. Adiyodi and R.G. Adiyodi Department of Zoology, Calicut University, India. The story of invertebrate gametes their structure, origin, composition, physiology, and production mechanisms?was told in Volumes I and II and how accessory sex gland secretions facilitate their packing, storage, survival, and delivery, in Volume III. The story of the gametes however, is not complete until events leading to and following their union have been narrated.?Fertilization, Development, and Parental Care?, the fourth volume in the encyclopaedic series narrates in detail this half of the story. It provides very valuable information, some hitherto unpublished, on insemination, spermegg interaction, fertilization, embryonic and post-embryonic development, eclosion, larval settlement and metamorphosis, embryonic nutrition, and types of care bestowed by parents on the developing young. Developmental biology, as reviewed and discussed in these pages, covers various aspects?descriptive, experimental ultrastructural, physiological, biochemical, and molecular. Cell lineage, role of cell adhesion as well as morphogenetic determinants in morphogenesis, and patterns of nucleic acid and protein synthesis are described, and some phylogenetic conclusions drawn based on patterns of cleavage and development. This volume issued in two parts, serves as an indispensable corollary and companion to the three volumes that have already appeared in the series.
