Excerpt from Moses: A Course of Lectures: Delivered in the Chapel of St. James' Church, New London

How valuable to him a knowledge of the ways of the desert before he entered the desert, some experi ence of its hardships and endurances, some observation of the sentiments and traditions that governed its peo ple, superadded to his trainings in the country of the Nile. How kindly and suitably is this intermediate stage thrown in between his Egyptian life, and his long sojourning in the wilds of Arabia. How wisely and beneficently ordered was it that he did not step at once from the voluptuousness of Memphis to the wastes of Sinai, but went to them through the rougher but not ungenial hospitalities of Jethro, and the ruder scenes and occupations of a pastoral and nomadic life, amidst the solitudes of Horeb. Egypt was the uni versity in which the elements of general knowledge and intelligence were acquired and stored up, leavened by the private and gentle lessons in the fear of God that went along with them; and Midian, the higher school, in which he was taught to apply this knowl edge to the uses of that form of life in which the re mainder of his work on earth was to be performed.

And now the work of training in its contrasted phases was complete, and the voice came to him.
