Spanning his entire career, this book reviews Hodgkin's early and formative experiences, tracing his development from these beginnings. It also offers an exchange between the artist and the author, John Elderfield, exploring ideas and topics illuminating Hodgkin's work. The book also includes a catalogue raisonne of all Hodgkin's oil paintings to date, examining the artist's historical development, the full range of his achievement and the critical reaction to his work.

When the British Council mounted an exhibition of Hodgkin's work for the British Pavilion at the 1984 Venice Biennale, the critic Robert Hughes observed: "Not since. the Biennale 20 years ago has a show by a single painter so hogged the attention of visitors or looked so effortlessly superior to everything else on view by living artists." The exhibition, which subsequently toured Europe and the eastern United States, was the last major survey of this important artist's work. As organizer of this exhibition, it has been my privilege to work closely with the artist, and my most sincere thanks must go to him for the enthusiasm, intelligence, and generosity he has brought to this project. This catalogue represents the most extensive study to date of Hodgkin's work. particularly with the catalogue raisonne, which is the first introduction to all of his oil paintings.
