The first volume of a three-volume complete edition of Newton's optical papers contains his Optical Lectures, delivered at Cambridge University between 1670 and 1672. The Lectures is Newton's first major scientific treatise, and consequently it represents a crucial link between his early years of discovery and his mature investigations and publications, such as the Optiks in 1704. It is divided into two parts: the first part devoted to color and the second to refraction. Originally published in 1984, this edition made available the complete text, together with translation and commentary, of both surviving versions of the Lectures, a draft and a vastly expanded revision. Until the time of publication, scholars had to depend on an uncritical text of the revision and an inadequate partial English translation, both published shortly after Newton's death. Professor Shapiro's critical edition has made a great contribution to the study of Newtonian science.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 4to (26 cm), XIX, [1], 627 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket, top edge painted (dj slightly toned and rubbed at extremities, endpapers somewhat stained). This first volume of a planned three-volume complete edition of Newton's optical papers contains his Optical Lectures, delivered at Cambridge University between 1670 and 1672. For his inaugural lectures as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, Newton chose to draw upon his recent extensive investigations and expound his revolutionary theory that sunlight consists of rays of different colors, each refracted unequally. In the Optical Lectures, he presents his most comprehensively developed mathematical and experimental account of color and refraction. This edition publishes, for the first time, the complete text, along with a translation and commentary, of both surviving versions of the lectures: an initial draft and a vastly expanded revision. Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. The authoritative work covering Isaac Newton's early optical lectures as the newly appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge." Lectiones Opticae" (Optical Lectures) was Newton's first extensive dissertation; this book, volume 1 of a proposed 3 volume project, covers the lectures presented at Cambridge between the years 1670-1672. These lectures were derived from Newton's early experimentation with prisms in the "miracle year" of 1665/66 at Woolsthorpe - the most productive year of Newton's legendary career. Those early findings were first revealed to the world in his "Theory About Light and Colours" whose first appearance was in Vol.VI of the" Philosophical Transactions" for 1671/72, Newton's first scientific publication (See my offering on this site). The Optical Lectures also served as the foundation for Isaac Newton's 2nd scientific masterwork, The "Opticks" of 1704. First edition; book and dj as new. Codice articolo 000040
