This 1991 book identifies and illustrates the basic varieties of security policy from the nineteen- and twentieth-centuries. Professor Mandelbaum demonstrates that each state in not entirely free from external constraints. They are also not wholly restricted to its position in the international system and because of this they have been more prudent then often retrospectively been judged.
