The late twentieth century is undoubtedly the age of technology. Each technological development leads to more sophisticated devices and further scientific advances. Because of the pace of change, it is difficult to obtain a broad overview of the way fundamental science is linked to its everyday applications. Principles of Modern Technology describes the physical principles on which modern technology is based. Four primary areas have been singled out: computers and microelectronics, communications, nuclear energy and space flight. Each topic is treated in a way that gives the reader an insight into the underlying physics which makes the technology possible as well as the orders of magnitude involved. Based on a course taught at the University of Rochester, the book will be useful both as a textbook for courses in applied physics and engineering and as a reference book. It will be of interest to undergraduates taking introductory physics courses and anyone interested in modern technology.

"...there is an admirable aim here--to tie the theory of physics to its application. The result could be an education and a handy reference guide for practitioners as well as students." The Engineer
"Principles of Modern Technology is well worth the money, and is the kind of mind expanding challenge that engineers and scientists need. Melissinos is well organized and challenging as he leads us through the major issues of the magic of modern technology." Applied Mechanics Review

Blanda. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Nuevo. No Aplica (illustratore). 1. Our society is inextricably dependent on technology that affects every aspect of our lives. However, the fundamental principles that make our technology possible are not always appreciated and it is difficult to get a broad overview of how science is linked to its everyday applications. Principles of Modern Technology discusses the physical laws underlying technology and their impact on practical devices. Four main areas have been identified; computers and microelectronics, communications, nuclear power, and space flight. Each topic is treated in a way that gives the reader insight into the underlying physics and allows calculation of the orders of magnitude involved. Based on a course taught at the University of Rochester, the book is well suited as a text for upperclassmen in science and engineering. It will also be useful as a reference book for science and technology professionals. 500 gr. Libro. Codice articolo 9780521389655LEA1839
