È una calda giornata estiva nel villaggio turistico di avebury. Un uomo è seduto fuori dal pub red lion, in attesa. Vede una donna con tre bambini piccoli, due dei quali corrono davanti mentre la sorella indugia dietro. La voce di un bambino cattura la brezza. In mancanza di qualcosa di più interessante da fare, l'uomo osserva. Non vede nulla di sinistro o minaccioso. Anche quando un'altra figura entra nel suo campo visivo, non reagisce. La figura è normale: maschio, capelli corti, corporatura robusta. Ma si muove velocemente, a passo di lumaca. E poi succede. Con un movimento rapido, l'uomo che corre afferra la bambina più piccola e la porta via. L'uomo fuori dal pub non reagisce ancora. All'improvviso, un furgone bianco irrompe nel campo visivo, il motore che accelera, la portiera posteriore che si chiude di colpo. La bambina e il suo rapitore sono dentro.
