This collection brings together the poems Ted Hughes wrote throughout his life for children. They are arranged by volume, beginning with those younger readers and progressing to the more complex and sophisticated poems of "Under the North Star and What is the Truth?", and" Season Songs", which he remarked were written 'within hearing' of children. Hughes reveals his instinctive grasp of a child's insatiable curiosity, humour and invention, and his own incomparable understanding of the natural world, in poems that engage and stretch the imagination in a way no other poet has done before or since. Raymond Briggs brings to the collection drawings that capture the wit, gentleness and humanity of these poems and make this a book any reader will return to again and again for inspiration and reassurance.

Ted Hughes (1930–1998) published numerous volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children from the late 1950s until his death. His first poetry for children, Meet My Folks!, was published in 1961 and subsequent books went on to win, among others, the Kurt Maschler Award, the Signal Prize for Poetry and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award. His classic story, The Iron Man, remains a best seller and was made into an animated film, The Iron Giant, in 1999. Hughes was appointed Poet Laureate in 1984 and received the Order of Merit in 1998. Raymond Briggs was born in Wimbledon Park, South London, in 1934, and has produced some of the most cherished and admired picture-books of our time, including Father Christmas, Fungus the Bogeyman, The Snoman, When the Wind Blows and Ethel and Ernest. He has won numerous awards including the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration, the Children’s Book of the Year Award and the British Book Awards’ Best Illustrated Book of the Year.
