This text was designed primarily for anaesthetists preparing for the final part of the FCAnaes examination. In the second edition, the editors have built upon the success of the first by commissioning from the contributors a thorough updating to reflect the changes that have taken place in the last few years. In particular, care has been taken to cover recent developments in intensive care practice and the management of acute and chronic pain. There is enhanced coverage of physiology and pharmacology as applied to anaesthesia, with new chapters on the haematological system and hepatic physiology. There are also new chapters on the clinical use of muscle relaxants and the monitoring of neuromuscular transmission, nausea, vomiting and anti-emetics, statistics and clinical trials and on pain relief in children.
