A revised and updated edition of the handbook for all those working with animals under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. Designed to be a bench-top reference, it contains information covering all aspects of laboratory animal care and use. It is aimed at improving animal welfare through encouragement of best practice and refinement of techniques. The content of the book follows the first four modules of the Home Office licensee training requirements. Section One covers principles applicable to all species, including legislation and ethical considerations, health and safety, supply and transport of animals, minor techniques, and an introduction to anaesthesia and surgery. Section Two covers biology, husbandry, health monitoring and common diseases and is species-based for ease of reference. Both large and small laboratory animals are included, and there is new information covering wild and exotic species and birds.
