The number of mercenaries in Italy was very large. Saundo gives a list of those under arms in 1439. By which we learn that there were horse, divided under 170 Condottieri; but this did not include those under the Duke of Savoy, the Marquises of Saluzzo and Monferrat, or the Communes of Lucca, Genoa, and Perugia; and of course the foot soldiers were also not counted.
