Miss Elizabeth Gilchrist, m.a., B.se., and Mr. David Penman, B.se., who assisted Dr. Briggs since July, 1917 have recently accepted other posts; the former as Carnegie Research Fellow in the University of Edinburgh and the latter as Lecturer in Mining in the St. Helen's Technical Institute. We are sorry to l the help of these expert assistants, who gave two years of loyal work to the research. In September, 1918, Mr. Penman read an excellent digest of the First Report before' the Institution of Mining Engineers, and the ensuing discussion was of much value.
