Excerpt from Notes and Queries, Vol. 8: A Medium of Intercommunication for Literary Men, General Readers, Etc.; July-December, 1877

The only explanation which appears at all satisfactory is the influence of the Danes and Northmen, who were dominant in England at or a little before that period, and whose speech and habits were identical with those of the Icelanders.
