Wenn diese Darlegung der Verhältnisse, unter denen das jetzt erscheinende Werk entstanden ist, die Herausgeber vor gar zu ungünstiger Beurthei lung ihres langen Zögerns schützen mag so hat sie zugleich die gesteigerten Ansprüche angedeutet, welche sie selbst an ihre gmneinschaftliche Arbeit machen zu müssen glaubten. Es wird also, um den Plan des Werks vollständig zu entwickeln, nur noch der gedrängten Uebersicht desjenigen bedürfen was in der Bearbeitung der verschiedenen Zweige der römischen Merkwürdigkeiten bisher geleistet wor den ist.
