It has almost become a custom, that the Author of a book, and particularly 'of a new School-book, begins his Pre face with a sort of apology for having dared to increase the great number of similar works. I will not do any such thing. In my Opinion, every work that is presented to the Public, must justify its own appearance, if this is not the case, all excuses and apologies in the Preface are superfluous and generally ridiculous. The number of German Grammars is indeed very great, but I also know that a great many of them are of such a kind, that they must soon fall into oblivion.
