The following pages contain records Of the Oldest social College Club in Oxford - the Phoenix Common Room at Brasenose. NO club could exist for a hundred years, and show itself ﬂourishing at its centenary, without something sound and healthy in its principles and constitution; and the Editor believes that he need not apologize even for an imperfect attempt to put together, from the careful records of the Club, some account of the rules under which it has lived, and Of the Members who have successively composed it. The biographical details Of the latter part he has derived from other sources.* In this preface he will endeavour to sketch the foundation of the Society, and a few Of the incidents Of its career. It will be readily understood that a social club, in Spite Of its rapid changes of personnel and even habits, can have little of annals or history proper. Dinners and table-talk in 1786 and 1886 differ in kind about as much as human nature itself.
