Da kam die russische Intervention; zwei Kaiser reiche hatten sich verbündet, um uns zu vernichten und als nach furchtbaren Kämpfen unsere Kraft und Ausdauer erschöpft war und Görgey bei Vilagos die Waffen gestreckt hatte, da war all' das verloren, wofür wir gekämpft: Vaterland, Freiheit, Nationalität; aber selbst die letzten Augenblicke der Katastrophe wurden noch verherrlicht durch die Siege bei Komorn und Hegyes. Vae victis! Wurde jetzt der Wahlspruch der Sieger, auf das Epos folgte die Tragödie; das Schaffot, auf dem unsere Besten verbluteten, gewann der ungari schen Nation noch einmal die Sympathie der ganzen Welt, die, tief ergriffen, vor der blutigen Rache des Siegers zurückschauderte und anerkannte, dass der Ungar zu kämpfen und zu siegen und mit Würde zu sterben verstehe.
