Sinossi

Rochat (psychology, Emory U.) provides an overview of infant research, making the case that infants know more than we think they do. As early as one month, for example, infants are able to transfer oral knowledge of a uniquely shaped pacifier to visual recognition of a slide of that same pacifier. Initial chapters provide historical, biological, and evolutionary facts about infant development, and three subsequent chapters address the infant in relation to the domains of self, objects, and other people. Finally, infant development is examined in terms of key psychological transitions and developmental mechanisms that Rochat claims are too often presented as single causes of infant behavior and development.
