Hardcover. Condizione: NF. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. Photos, Maps (illustratore). 1st. Sub-titled "The US 8th Air Force Battle For Daylight Bombing," this important book is set against the background of the mission policies of the USAAF when it deployed to England to join the WWII bombing offensive against Germany. Whereas the RAF was early forced to night raids for its main force of bombers, the US opted for dayight missions, despite reservations these could be conducted without incurring unacceptable losses. A pivotal point in this offensive was a series of long-penetration raids to Eastern Germany against ball-bearing .production facilities. It was believed that destruction of these would cripple the supply of the small, but essential, components for all sections of the German war machine. Though losses in two major operations agsinst the factories. in August and October 1943, were extremely heavy, they did not convince the US to change to night operations. The raids are recalled as among the most dangerous ever mounted. but were also costly to the Luftwaffe's defending fighter units. Though the Schweinfurt raids achieved little toward reducing German weapons production, the daylight offensive contined and with the RAF night missions brought the round-the-clock attacks over Germany that played an important part in eventual victory. The auithor presents a dramatic depiction of these raids, of the controversies, before, during and ever since, based on two years of extensive research in Germany, England and the US and backgrounding the political, strategic and military questions raised in the three participating nations. Arguably the most significant work on this series of operations. This copy of the book contains an interesting note on the FFEP lower corner: "This book was given to me by Gen Ira Eaker, WWII Cmdr 8thAF at Hq SAC on 23 June 1977. Russell Dougherty, General, USAF CINCSAC" (General Eaker masterminded the Schweinfurt raids.) Black hard covers with blue spine titles NF, internally excellent, inscription noted adove lower FFEP, internally NF. Unclipped colour art DJ has two short tears spine top, few chips and is VG+.
