(Like their language, they are inexact about time and tend to state things in extreme terms.) Patai explains the factors underlying the Arabs' tendency toward extremes of behavior as well as their tendency to substitute words for deeds. He devotes separate chapters to religion, sex, and nationalism, to the Arab response to Westernization and modernization, and to the relation between Arab art and the rest of Arab culture.
