Designed for students who have completed at least two years of college Chinese, this thoroughly revised edition of All Things Considered bridges the gap between intermediate- and advanced-level Chinese. Lessons promote student discussion and include thought-provoking topics relevant to contemporary Chinese society, such as the increasing divisions between the rich and poor, the conflict between economic development and environmental protection, and changing attitudes toward sex and marriage. The first twelve lessons in the book are in dialogue form, while the remaining lessons are adapted from Chinese newspaper and magazine articles, exposing students to spoken and written styles of Chinese. Some topics appear in both the dialogues and articles sections, giving students ample opportunity for review and reinforcement, improving their overall grammar and vocabulary retention.
With a new user-friendly format, All Things Considered juxtaposes text and vocabulary on adjacent pages. Grammar explanations and exercises have also been fully updated to meet student needs.

All Things Considered was first published in 2001 and has been adopted by manyinstitutions. In the process of using this book, we discovered a few errors and a fewinsufficient explanations, which we have now taken the opportunity to correct andappend in this revised edition.
The main focus of this revision has been rearranging and reformatting the layoutof each page. Originally, traditional and simplified character texts were juxtaposedon adjacent pages, with vocabulary words following. The revised edition juxtaposesthe simplified character text and vocabulary words on adjacent pages and includes thetraditional character text at the end of each lesson. This change makes it much moreconvenient for students to prepare the lesson, while at the same time it reflects thegrowing trend of using simplified characters in international Chinese languageeducation.
Although we have actually increased the number of vocabulary words andexample sentences in the revised edition, due to changes in formatting and font size, this edition actually has fewer pages than the last, making the book easier to flipthrough and carry.
Ms. Joanne Chiang undertook the revision of this book, coordinating thesupplementation of vocabulary words and example sentences. Ms. Cara Healeyproofread the entire English portion of the manuscript and also provided manyvaluable suggestions. To them we extend our sincere thanks. Of course, any errorsin the final manuscript are the authors' own.
