When Constable Nick leads a procession of villagers around Aidensfield's parish boundaries as part of an ancient custom, he realizes his work involves practices that have little connection with his constabulary duties. Nicholas Rhea is the pen-name of Peter N. Walker, formerly an inspector with the North Yorkshire Police and now the creator of the Constable series, which inspired the hugely successful TV series Heartbeat, and author of many very successful topographical books about Yorkshire and the Lake District.
