A chance meeting in the rain with a countrified miss embroils Marcus Viscount Tyrell, the spoilt only son of a renowned general, in a search for the young lady's brother who has mysteriously disappeared while on a visit to London, leaving his sister alone and penniless in a strange city. Marcus has his own suspicions about the matter, but after making the acquaintance of the delectable Charity Holt, who keeps a disreputable gaming-house, it soon becomes obvious to him that there is more to the case than meets the eye, especially when the general himself takes a hand. But even a bullet in the shoulder and a quarrel with his father cannot put off the general's volatile son, and he soon follows the trail to Norfolk, where he meets with some surprises and makes a remarkable discovery.
