Sinossi

Explaining and promoting a contextualist approach to the design of buildings in existing urban environments, this book analyzes issues at the heart of the current debate on modern town planning. The authors argue for the adoption of a contextual approach to creating townscapes. The systematic procedure they outline begins with advice on conducting a survey of the general location, before going on to consider the requirements of an individual site. A critical appraisal of development briefs is stressed and various methods for testing the impact of a development on its surroundings are suggested. The book is illustrated with examples taken from some 50 towns, supported by a detailed commentary.
