Finally, he explores the relationship between history and archaeology, resolving the conflict between modern progress and the conservation of ancient sites.

I have tried to provide a readable and informative book suitable for just about any interested reader from midteens upwards. I envisage it as a first point of contact with the subject, and hope that it may lead on to wider reading. It is certainly not designed as a textbook, for lack the comprehensive range of knowledge that this term implies. The book reflects my interests, and it does not claim to venture very far beyond my own expertise in the archaeology of Roman and early medieval western Europe.
