Riassunto

"Left Brain, Right Brain" provides a comprehensive and current survey on the nature of hemispheric differences, presented in a clearly written but scientifically uncompromising style. It covers findings on asymmetry in brain-damaged, split-brain, and normal subjects and explores their implications for human behaviour. The book discusses such topics as left-handedness, sex differences, psychiatric illness, learning disabilities, and theories of consciousness Updated throughout, this third edition features new or expanded material on the possible relationship between left-handedness and immune disorders, the role of the right hemisphere in language, hemispheric asymmetry and emotion, the implications of surgical separation of the hemispheres for brain research, and new evidence on how one hemisphere compensates for damage to the other. This award-winning book also features expanded coverage of the biological foundations of hemispheric asymmetry, and highlights the considerable progress that has been made by using brain imaging techniques to investigate hemispheric differences. Throughout, "Left Brain, Right Brain" separates what is reasonably established as fact from what is purely speculation, without sacrificing the intrigue of either. An appendix presenting a review of neuroanatomy makes this work accessible to the reader who has little or no previous exposure to the field.
