Colin Chandler is fascinated with Chinese things, including his beautiful neighbour, who is in turn in love with his colleague. At the centre of the story is Colin's fight to save an old Chinese Honey Locust tree in the centre of Melbourne, which is intertwined with the story of Chinese migration to Melbourne in the 19th century and how the tree came to be there.
