"Critical Theology" is an account of some of the key issues facing contemporary theology, as well as an interpretation of some of the outstanding figures of 20th century thought. In the first part of the book, Jones examines the work of Barth, Harnack, Bonhoeffer, Rahner, Moltmann, Sobrino and Tracy. Against this backcloth Jones develops, in Part Two, an interpretation of the structure, dynamic and perspective of Christian theology in terms of mystery, event and rhetoric. Using these terms to construct a framework for critical theology, Jones offers a new agenda for discussing the task of the Christian theologian in the late 20th century. This work challenges theology to think seriously about how it addresses the social and cultural concerns of its audience as well as the context of religious pluralism within which it operates.

′Gareth Jones′s book should put him in the front rank of British theologians. It has a subtlety and maturity quite rare in recent writing on systematic theology, and a keen sense of the cultural crises in which theology works. Jones offers new analyses of major figures in twentieth–century theology that are often provocative and always full of insight, and his own suggestions for theological reconstruction are original and fertile. A major achievement. Rowan Williams, Bishop of Monmouth
′His book is not just another plea for a critical approach to theology. It is an attempt to define an appropriate way of constructing a fully systematic theology which will also be thoroughly critical in its approach.′ Church Times
′Gareth Jones offers an eclectic, wide–ranging and energetic romp through the fields of modern theology so as to establish what he calls ′critical theology′. ... An ambitious and provocative book...′ Theology
′... An immensely clever work by a young theologian... This is a book which is full of ideas and which is written with a sweep and confidence that bodes well for the future of theology in Britain. It is also well within the traditional parameters of the Christian faith.′ Ministry
′This volume has numerous perceptive individual insights and passages of sustained theological power. It reflects a serious engagement with the central themes of Christian theology, and is in itself a creditable witness to the primacy of the possible, an impressive platform for a programme of radical and constructive theological exploration for the future.′ Reviews
