Sinossi

"Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction" covers the specific challenges faced by the construction industry as well as the basics of occupational safety and health in general. The coverage of this book has been directly matched to the Certificate course in Construction Safety and Health from NEBOSH. However, the comprehensive coverage of health and safety topics in a construction context make it relevant for other courses in 'Construction Design and Management', 'Construction Safety and Health', and the 'Built Environment', both in the UK and overseas, as well as for construction professionals who are looking for an introduction to health and safety which addresses the specific problems encountered in their industry. This text is highly illustrated in full colour, easy to read and includes self-assessment questions taken directly from NEBOSH examinations as well as specimen answers. A chapter on study skills offers support for professionals returning to study. This text is also supported with checklists, report forms and record sheets, making it a valuable reference tool for construction managers, supervisors, designers, building and civil engineers to consult on the day to day issues of health and safety. This book is restructured in line with the unitised NEBOSH syllabus. It features a new chapter with specimen answers for the two written examinations and a specimen practical assignment, and management report. It is updated throughout in line with changes in the regulations, including CDM 2007, alterations to the application of the fire safety order 2005 following CDM 2007, Control of Asbestos 2006, REACH, and legislation on smoke-free workplaces. Phil Hughes MBE, MSc, CFIOSH, is a former Chairman of NEBOSH (1995-2001), former President of IOSH (1990-1991) and runs his own consultancy. He received an MBE for services to health and safety and as a director of RoSPA, in the New Year's Honours List 2005. Ed Ferrett PhD, BSc (Hons Eng), CEng, MIMechE, MIET, CMIOSH, is the Vice Chairman of NEBOSH and a lecturer on NEBOSH courses at Cornwall Business School of Cornwall College. He is a Chartered Engineer and a health and safety consultant. This book is endorsed by NEBOSH (to be confirmed) and is easily accessible for students with numerous full-colour illustrations, revision questions taken from recent NEBOSH examinations and specimen answers. It includes a summary of the main legislation, ideal as a reference for students as well as for all managers in the construction industry.

- John Lacey, FIOSH, RSP, FSIA, MASSE, Past President of IOSH and the Past Chairman of the Construction Specialist Group

"This reference book is an excellent study aid for those engaging in the new NEBOSH Construction Certificate syllabus. The text of this book is well laid out and easy to read. It follows a logical sequence similar to that instigated on a project - namely planning through implementation to review."
- Lawrence Webb, MIOSH, RSP, AIEMA, Costain Limited & International SHE Manager

A text book for student and practitioner, 6 Mar 2006
Reviewer: Richard D D Woolley (London UK)
"Technical books fulfil two main purposes. They are either a basis of study for the student preparing for exams or they are where busy practitioners go to find quick answers to unfamiliar problems. Many text books do not do both. This one does. I have a shelf full of turgid books essential to the student but which remain largely unread and rarely consulted. Whilst modestly describing itself as an introduction to the subject, I am sure many practitioners would agree that this work covers as much of it as they are likely to need. I have possessed mine for only two months yet already it is a constant companion. It is most attractively presented with many colour illustrations, charts and schedules. The chapter topics are well chosen and apposite. Each chapter is split into short digestible sections and best of all, the index has not let me down yet. Towards the end of the book is an invaluable 85 page, easily navigated, chapter on the main legal requirements governing the subject. Aimed at covering the NEBOSH syllabus, the content is necessarily comprehensive. At the same time it is accessible and guides the busy practitioner quickly to assistance on the subject matter before him. I can well recommend this book to all in the Construction Industry who seek an attractively presented, clear, concisely written but nonetheless full guide to a subject now so dominant in the design and exection of its products."
