Riassunto

The Redskins entered the NFL in 1932 as the Boston Braves, and after moving to the nation’s capital in 1937, the team quickly asserted itself among the league’s top teams, making five title-game appearances and winning two championships in nine years. Although a long postseason drought followed, there was no shortage of star players to cheer for, including Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Bobby Mitchell, and Charley Taylor. The arrival of coach George Allen in the 1970s, followed by Joe Gibbs in the ’80s, elevated the program to elite status once again. All-time legends like John Riggins, Joe Theismann, Art Monk, Darrell Green, and “the Hogs” helped carry the team to three Super Bowl victories under Gibbs. Washington Redskins: The Complete Illustrated History takes you through nearly 80 seasons of Redskins football, profiling all the great players, games, and moments up through today. It is the essential reference for any Redskins fan.

Dal risvolto di copertina interno

The Washington Redskins have been at the forefront of the National Football League since the franchise was established in 1932 when the team was based in Boston and was known as the Braves. Beginning with their final season in Beantown (1936), the Redskins appeared in five NFL championships over a nine-year period with Slingin Sammy Baugh at quarterback. Although it would be another quarter century before the men in maroon and gold would return to postseason play, there was no shortage of talented and exciting players in Washington during those lean years, including Hall of Famers Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen, Charley Taylor, and Sam Huff.

A one-year coaching stint by all-time legend Vince Lombardi in 1969 was followed by a return to glory under the leadership of another Hall of Fame coach, George Allen, who took the team to its first Super Bowl after the 1972 season. The Redskins true era of greatness came in the following decade, when Joe Gibbs coached the team to four Super Bowls and three titles between 1982 and 1992. Those championship teams included unique characters such as John Riggins and the Hogs offensive line, perennial all-stars like Joe Theismann and Gary Clark, and all-time legends Art Monk and Darrell Green.

Although the Redskins have not been back to the big game since their Super Bowl XXVI victory, players like Clinton Portis, Ken Harvey, Champ Bailey, LaVar Arrington, Santonio Moss, and others have kept up the excitement on the field and keep Washington s loyal fans coming to Fed Ex Field in droves.

In Washington Redskins: The Complete Illustrated History, David Elfin takes you year by year through all the great players, moments, and seasons and some not so great that have consistently made the Redskins one of the biggest draws in professional football and the pride of the entire D.C. area. He profiles the top players from each era and explores in detail all the championship games. An appendix of team records and a wealth of glorious photos and vintage memorabilia round out this ultimate celebration of an iconic sports franchise.
