Covering the period from the decline of the Mongol empire to the Bolshevik Revolution, this work (reprinted from 1974) presents 12 contributions which comprise an attempt to provide a comprehensive view of Russian expansionism as an imperial rather than consolidating project. After the presentation of three papers exploring the origins of Russian expansionism, the rest of the contributions look at the implementation of plans and objectives as the Russian rulers successively conquered more and more territory.
