The issue of Judaism's relationship to secular learning and wisdom is one of the most basic concerns of Jewish intellectual history. Dr. Jacob J. Schacter is Rabbi of The Jewish Center in New York City. He received rabbinic ordination from Mesivta Torah Vodaath and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has written many articles on Jewish themes and is the editor of The Torah u-Madda Journal. He is also the author of a forthcoming study of Rabbi Jacob Emden. He currently lives in New York City with his wife and two daughters.
