Ethologists Kortmulder and Robbers (respectively retired from and currently at, Leiden U.) explore characteristics and examples of agonistic aggressive and hedonic relaxed modes of social behavior in animals and humans. The animals are macaques, rodents, birds, and fish. Their discussions of human behavior include a comparison of the Potlatch and the Kula, Lévi Stauss' views on patterns of relationships in the human family and the rules of exogamy, and the ubiquitous hierarchy. Their hypotheses and interpretations focus on the coexistence of love and order, but they also consider some mathematical aspects. The text is double spaced.
