If there are universals, they are best discovered by delving deep into one's own culture and living out its possibilities and responsibilities. -- At the same time, Bonhoeffer learned from those who were at the edge of his own, most intimate circles. He learned from people notably different from him. Many of his insights came from experiences abroad. So it is with us as well. -- This volume assumes at least a casual acquaintance with Bonhoeffer and his writings, and a full acquaintance with life in North America. The mature work of Bonhoeffer will be examined at some length, but the purpose for doing so is to give rise to thought about our own reality on this side of the Atlantic. Christian life on this continent is the thread of concern in this book. Bonhoeffer is the stimulus for helping us discern what we are called to be and do. That he is now of another generation and culture is a marked advantage, not a disadvantage. A different place to stand affords a better gaze. -- Only one of the chapters is an exception to the focus on North American issues. It is the first chapter, written by Renate Schleicher Bethge, a member of the Bonhoeffer family. Her essay, "Bonhoeffer's Family and Its Significance for his Theology," serves a double purpose: it presents Bonhoeffer in the circles most important to him, and shows how formative, familial influences echo in the themes of his theology and ethics.
