Finding that early modern English meditational writing does not jive with our concept of culture, redefines and historizes culture as a production of literature. Considering from Donne to Coleridge, argues that the emphasis on political economy and material history, and the views of commerce and discrimination, are at odds with culture as disinterested imagination or a nexus of hegemonic forces.
