The Democratic Invention - Brossura

9780801864193: The Democratic Invention

Sinossi

Thirteen scholars and world leaders reflect upon the significance of democracy as a system of government, and its consequences both within individual countries and internationally. The book is organized into four parts, focusing on the recent history and future prospects of democracy world-wide, specific cases of democratic transition (the United States in the 18th century, Portugal in the 1970s, and Central Europe after 1989), different levels of democracy, and the problems that confront all democratic societies. Special attention is paid to new threats from ethnic conflict, economic globalization, and a spiritual weariness evident in older democracies. Annotation c. Recensione

"The expansion of democracy over the past quarter century, the so-called 'third wave', has sparked debate among scholars about the consolidation and future expansion of democratic rule. This book of broad-ranging, eclectic essays by many well-known scholars and world leaders exemplifies this debate." -- Pamela Camerra-Rowe, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics
