Sixteen revised papers presented at the conference on [title], held at York University, Toronto, in April 1989. Several essays discuss monuments that have stood at the core of medieval art-historical studies: the cathedrals of Durham, Wells, Chartres, Reims, Poitiers, Strasbourg, and Naumburg; the abbey of Saint-Denis; and the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Others are more theoretical studies of the historiography of modern scholarship: the classification of periods, styles, and concepts; and the issue of liturgy in its broadest definition, as the use of the building by those owning and operating it.
