Fortifications are often described in ancient texts and inscriptions yet the remains are so widely scattered, and sometimes so inaccessible, that they have never been systematically studied. This book provides the first detailed and comprehensive investigation of the historical development of Greek military architecture and the principles of defensive planning from 800 BC to the Roman arrival in Greece. In collecting the material for this book Dr Winter travelled thousands of miles on foot and muleback, by train, bus, car, ship, and plane, studying Greek city walls from different periods and in different regions of the Mediterranean world - Turkey, Greece, Sicily, Italy, and France. This study sheds further light not only upon some of the famous passages of Greek history but also upon the general historical development of the art of fortifications and siegecraft from antiquity onward. It will be of considerable interest to ancient historians, archaeologists, topographers, and those interested in classical culture and history in general. It is a readable book, not limited in appeal to specialists, and well illustrated with 316 photographs, drawings, and plans of the sites.
