He has published 11 volumes of poems and translations of poetry from Greek, Spanish, and Russian. He has also published novels, short stories, essays, and reviews. He won the Carl Sandburg Prize for his book of poetry, Maybe It Was So. At Northwestern University, he was the editor of TriQuarterly magazine from 1981 to 1997 and co-founded TriQuarterly Books (after 1997, an imprint of Northwestern University Press).
