An introduction to art appreciation but from a radical view point - the author believes that the mass availability of images has encouraged 'visual illiteracy' and his aim is to restore the intense perception that the mass media has dulled. In rejecting standard art-appreciation teaching methods, he concentrates on what is immediate, timeless and fundamental. By simply and clearly explaining the basic principles of 'art' he starts with material familiar to the reader, and embraces not only well-known masterpieces but comic strips and popular illustrations too. This fourth edition has been redesigned; as well as being in a larger format, there are 61 new illustrations. Richardson has also added a brief survey of the history of Western art, a chapter on art and money, and deals with other questions around replicas, copies and forgeries.
