To bring us close to the artists as individuals, and to illuminate the sources and significance of the many exotic aspects of their work, the editors, who jointly have spent over twenty years in Africa, and twenty~nine contributors with firsthand knowledge about the artists, provide brief biographies as well as analyses and appreciations of the works. Among the contributors are art critics, museum curators, and notables such as the sculptor Louise Bourgeois and the designer Ettore Sottsass.
