This richly comic work, long recognized as the most important expression of the director's views about himself and his art, communicates to its viewers an understanding of the processes of filmmaking itself. 8 1/2 is the story of a director's efforts to make a film; it depicts the conditions of creativity, the struggle waged between the individual and the world, a struggle that finally makes some sense out of life and art.
