In 1994, in my role as Technical Program Chair for the 17th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, I solicited proposals for mini-symposia to provide delegates with accessible summaries of important issues in research areas outside their particular specializations. Terry Peters and his colleagues submitted a proposal for a symposium on Fourier Trans forms and Biomedical Engineering whose goal was "to demystify the Fourier transform and describe its practical application in biomedi cal situations". This was to be achieved by presenting the concepts in straightforward, physical terms with examples drawn for the parti cipants work in physiological signal analysis and medical imaging. The mini-symposia proved to be a great success and drew a large and appreciative audience. The only complaint being that the time allocated, 90 minutes, was not adequate to allow the participants to elaborate their ideas adequately. I understand that this feedback helped the authors to develop this book.

The Fourier Transform in Biomedical Engineering surveys and introduces the Fourier Transform as a useful and practical technique in the biomedical sciences. The material covered in this primer will educate the reader in the fundamentals of Fourier theory through the use of practical demonstrations and examples. The text is suppored by the appropiate mathematics, but the conceptual manner in which the principles are explained will give both specialists and non-specialists a solid understanding of the subject matter. The presentation is accessible to a broad readership in the biomedical engineering community. The ideas presented here are reinforced throughout the book with intuitive examples drawn from real worlf applications, such as electrophysioilogical signall analysis and medical imaging. This new text is intended to interest scientists in biomedicine, medical imaging, and related fields. The careful explanations and many examples provide the essential material for those who require an understanding of the significance of temporal and spatial spectral analysis. This book will also serve as a useful resource to medical technologists and physicians for whom a grasp of Fourier principles would aid in their understanding of instruments such as CT and MR scanners. 460 gr.
