Each chapter is organized around a specific trope or assumption about how language works that may work for moving the story forward but is not actually based on linguistic science, in contrast to how much time the author often spent getting things like physics or mathematics right. Takes on common issues like linguistic drift in time travel, "universal" translators that can automatically translate languages it has never encountered before, telepathy, and even what types of things count as language. Includes extensive examples of specific scifi books and how well they did on understanding the science of language. Despite Lord of Rings technically being fantasy, it still gets some pages as it is the prime example of an author very interested in getting the linguistics right. Codice articolo B5D-H30
