A textbook for a one-year course that introduces algebraic number theory and the basic theory of class fields of algebraic number fields, divided to fit nicely into two semesters, or even two separate courses. The approach by congruence subgroups of the ideal group, rather than the cohomology of groups, reduces the prerequisites to material used in elementary Galois theory. An appendix supplies the proof for the structure theorem for finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain.
